Family comes first at The Lakes at Centerra. That’s why the community features a world‑class, innovative school that is just a short walk or bike ride away from your new home. High Plains School in Loveland, Colorado is an early childhood Pre‑K through 8th grade school designed to help students and families learn and grow together.

High Plains School features a unique STEAM curriculum, which incorporates a range of concepts including science, technology, engineering, art and math. Through STEAM curriculum, students are to challenged to apply their knowledge to real‑life situations. The carefully thought out program works to develop critical thinking skills, local and global awareness, communication and collaborative skills through problem‑based learning (PBL). Through the PBL program, students are able to interact extensively with community members employed in a wide variety of Loveland, Colorado jobs to solve current problems the community is facing, putting their education into action. The PBL approach allows High Plains School to be highly active within the community and create connections with neighbors of all ages and educational backgrounds.


High Plains School is located in the middle of The Lakes at Centerra community, providing easy access to the High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC), the Lake Club and all of the new homes in Loveland, Colorado. This convenient location allows students to safely walk or bike on the routes to and from school, putting parents’ minds at ease. The High Plains School curriculum supports students, families and the community though ongoing collaboration and the development of long‑term relationships through perseverance, responsibility and citizenship. Not only are students learning and growing, the community as a whole is also strengthened through High Plains School and their staff.

One of the best features of life at The Lakes at Centerra is the opportunity for the residents to easily connect with nature. The High Plains School also benefits from this perk. Not only does the school’s design have a focus on bringing the outdoors inside with expansive windows and lots of natural light, but it also provides ample opportunity for students to get involved with sustainability. The school has two gardens where students can learn about how food is grown and they can even harvest the food for the cafeteria, expanding their knowledge on where food comes from and how important it is to take care of the environment. Students also learn to give back to their community through the school’s donation program with the Larimer Food Bank.


A distinct advantage of High Plains School is its proximity to the High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC). Students are able to utilize HPEC as an outdoor classroom to learn about the environment, Colorado’s natural landscape and the importance of sustainability. It’s a great opportunity that helps provide students with a well‑rounded curriculum. The direct access to HPEC and its outdoor classrooms, greenhouses, natural learning environments, year‑round activities and a safe and convenient trail system provides students with a learning experience unlike any other. With all of these resources right outside residents’ doors, connecting people with nature has never been easier.

As part of Thompson School District, the 16th largest district in Colorado with highly rated and well‑regarded schools that excel in academics, High Plains Schools offers students an innovative and authentic education. The school was awarded with a National Education Planning Award for its planning efforts and initiatives to further its students’ education and make a lasting impact. They don’t just lecture the kids and hope the information sticks, they emerge the students in different ways of learning to help them better understand not only what they’re learning, but why it is important.

High Plains School provides an exceptional learning environment for students where they can learn how to be involved in the Loveland community and directly see the impact that they make. One of the ways that High Plains Schools utilizes this is through their geothermal heating and cooling system. It has a connected data dashboard the students can use to learn about their own electricity and water usage, allowing them to see first‑hand how their actions affect the world around them.
