Curriculum

A Full Head of Steam

It’s one thing to have a school right in your neighborhood, so close that kids can get themselves to class in the morning. It’s something else altogether to live near a STEAM school — that is, a school that emphasizes science, technology, engineering, art and math. At High Plains School, students discover the interconnectedness of things. They work on projects that weave together every topic: the S, T, E, A and M. And they learn to work collaboratively, developing skills in creativity and communication that will help them succeed at every step in life.

HIGH PLAINS ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

TEACHING A LOVE OF NATURE

Our friends at the Environmental Center are not only making the community more beautiful, they’re helping develop the next generation of Coloradans who appreciate and want to protect the delicate workings of nature. In cooperation with High Plains School, the Environmental Center has created curriculum that includes sustainability education, nature journaling, native plant and animal identification, and a lot more. There’s even an Ecology Club for the kids who fall head over heels for nature.

BUILDING DESIGN

A VERY SMART SCHOOLHOUSE

In August 2016, after more than a decade of planning, High Plains School opened its doors. The building was purpose-designed from the ground up as the first school in the Thompson School District to offer a STEAM curriculum, the first to accommodate classes from Early Childhood all the way through 8th Grade, and the first to achieve the highest levels of energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. In other words, the building is not only home to a STEAM school, it is itself a lesson in ecology, technology and artistry.

MOUNTAIN VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

THE NEXT STEP

Kids who live in The Lakes don’t have to go far to go far. Thanks to the High Plains School, they can get through 8th Grade without even leaving the neighborhood. Then when it’s time to move on to bigger and better things, Mountain View High School is just a five-minute drive. And there are all kinds of choices for nearby colleges and universities, including the University of Northern Colorado Loveland Center right here in Centerra.
